Santa Elena is a town of 15,000 people in Entre Rios Province, 729 kilometers upstream from
Buenos Aires on the Parana River. It is five hours by road from Argentina's capital. The town is
home to a world-class meat-packing plant that supplies international markets with corned beef,
extract of meat and other beef products. The factory is capable of handling 1,000 head of cattle
per day. The factory was operated for many years by Bovril Ltd. of London, England, until it was
sold to Cavenham Ltd. also of London. It was subsequently resold to Argentine owners and is
currently up for sale. Interested parties in the international meat industry may request details
from the Santa Elena Town Council. Santa Elena has a nine-hole golf course and offers excellent
dorado fishing on the mighty Parana River (Argentina's counterpart to the Mississippi), which at
this point is about a mile wide. The dorado is a hard-fighting golden carp best trolled for with
a silvery spoon lure. The town also offers tennis courts, hunting and water sports. Located in
rolling, partly wooded cattle-raising country, Santa Elena is home to 201 species of birds.
A former manager of the factory, Currell H. Smyth, an enthusiastic ornithologist, made a
collection of wild birds' eggs of all these species and donated it to the Buenos Aires Natural
History Museum. Among the local species are the swallows that migrate every year to San Juan
Capistrano, California, heralding the arrival of spring and the end of the Northern Hemisphere
winter. Santa Elena residents would be glad to consider a sister cities relationship with any
California city to which they are linked by the yearly migration of the swallows. Winter there
is summer here, and autumn here is springtime there.
Santa Elena Town is located besides Parana River in Argentina. The town had in the past century
an important frigorific factory for met products. The factory was changing names (Bovril, Safra, Frigorifico Regional Santa Elena) and owners. This factory is not working anymore.
